Domestica

Their first child was born in 1996 while they were apart of Mercy Rule. After daughter number two, the duo made the transition from nightly rocking on stage to nightly rocking on furniture. Once the children were old enough to babysit themselves, the couple formed Domestica. It has always been Heidi and Jon, but they have also rotated through a number of drummers during the band’s existence.

Twelve years ago in 2007, Heidi Ore and Jon Taylor stepped out from behind the curtain of retirement, and created Domestica. The married couple of 33 years created the punk band after playing off and on during the 2000’s due to them have children.

Jon, on the other hand, taught himself to play the guitar during the mid 70s, being inspired by bands like ACDC, Cheap Trick, and KISS. Restarting a band, of course the first train of thought is what are fans going to call you. When we asked them where the name “Domestica” came from Jon said, “It was kind of making fun of our lifestyle where we were in life. Really the focus is pretty calm, domestic, suburban existence.” Coming up the band name wasn’t too difficult, it’s the song writing part that brings a little more of a challenge. For about every 10 to 15 songs they create lyrics for, only one song ends up being performed.

Music has always been in Heidi’s blood. Her parents, both church musicians, had a major influence on what their daughter would become. She discovered her love for punk music when she moved to Lincoln. Heidi has never been a big fan of the huge arena shows, but rather, she enjoys being right in front of bands at smaller venues like The Drumstick where she saw many of the bands she grew to love perform. Heidi was always a singer growing up, never actually learning to play an instrument. That is until, Jon bought her a bass guitar for Valentine’s Day while they were in college.

The duo gets a thrill out of performing songs they barely know in front of crowds. The couple described how important playing at a venue actually is for the punk music scene in Lincoln. “It’s a place where people learned to be in a band and know that you could be in a band, no matter your skill level,” Jon said. He went on to add that bands have to train a community that music happens on stage, and that the Bay does an excellent job of getting bands to play that bring people in. It’s where people get their first chance to perform their craft on stage, in front of their fans and other music lovers alike. Overtime, similar to all music, the punk music scene has changed for the better. Over the years more and more women have burst onto the punk scene. One thing Jon really respects about the punk scene in Lincoln is that every band brings their own personality to punk music. Going to a show where multiple bands play, fans are guaranteed to get a wide experience of punk music.
